Spiritual Nugget 40
This final nugget is particularly special to me. In a season when I was struggling with both my child's behavior and my confidence as a parent, I turned to the internet. After pleading with God to give me answers as to WHY my child was behaving as she was, I searched for what others had to say.
Overwhelmed with the volumes of professional information, endless opinions, and infinite differing behavior management techniques, I almost quit caring. I had to regroup: "Lord, sum this up for me because I don't know where to start." He opened my eyes to six key words:
Protect
Love
Empower
Acknowledge
Secure
Encourage
Mom, please...
Protect me from harm. Don't be the source of it.
Love me unconditionally with affectionate words, actions and quality time.
Empower me with opportunities to show you I really CAN do it.
Acknowledge my good works and behavior with praise, and my presence with eye contact.
Secure my sense of safety and self-worth by being dependable, firm yet gentle, and honest.
Encourage me with inspiring words, consolations and applause.
My jaw dropped when I recognized the acronym. I wrote the words on a sticky pad, posted them on the fridge, and have referenced them ever since. Coincidently, it also revealed areas I struggled with personally, that were hindering my ability to be emotionally available to my child. I am and will be forever grateful for the healing process that has challenged and enriched my parenting approach. I pray the same holds true for you!
I encourage you to print out a P.L.E.A.S.E. poster to post on your own fridge, as my gift to you.
